The American way of life - American lifestyles

America is the world’s third largest nation with a population of 325 million people. The country developed from its Native American roots following a series of waves of immigration and attracted people from around the world.

It is one of the most culturally diverse places in the world and is often described as a “melting pot”. In such a vast country, it is nearly impossible to describe a “typical” American.

American Language

The United States does not have an official language, although some states have official or preferred languages. English is the dominant language, with 90% of the population speaking at least a portion of English. However, an estimated 20% of people speak a language other than English at home.

Spanish, Chinese, French and German are the most common other languages.

American States

There are fifty (50) states and Washington D.C.The last two states to join the Union were Alaska (49′) and Hawaii (50′). Both joined in 1959.
