This time, we will deliver a mini-interview to the developer of the turn-based tactical RPG ” The Iron Oath ” , which was developed by Curious Panda Games and started early access for PC / Mac on April 20th .

This work is a turn-based tactical RPG where you become the leader of a mercenary unit in a medieval fantasy world, challenge dangerous missions in search of fame, and survive with skillful operations. The world of Caelum, an adventurous setting, evolves dynamically over time, awaiting new story discoveries and unpredictable developments. Japanese is not supported at the time of writing the article.

First of all, please introduce yourself. What is your favorite game?

Mr. Nik Mueller (Nik) This is Nik Mueller who was in charge of the art for this work. My friend Chris Wingard is in charge of all the programming and he and I work together as Curious Panda Games. My favorite game I’ve ever played is “Age of Empires II”. I’ve always been a big fan of strategy games!

Why did the development of this work start?

Nik We started developing this game after playing Darkest Dungeon in 2016 . I loved the system and characters that went through the tense dungeon of this work. We soon began to wonder if there was a bigger world in this game where time was important. Based on this idea, we started the development of this work!

Please tell us the features of this work.

Nik I think the stage of this work is the biggest feature. Characters are often affected over time, but the changing world itself may not yet be dealt with much in this genre. Players control only small mercenaries, but I also like the idea of ​​intervening in wars between kingdoms, allying one country and defeating another.

What kind of person do you want this work to be played by?

Nik This work is influenced by many RPGs. “Darkest Dungeon,” ” Battle Brothers ,” and “Dungeons & Dragons.” If you like these games and old-fashioned RPGs like Baldur’s Gate, you’ll probably enjoy this game.

How long do you plan for early access? What kind of elements will be added in the future?

Nik Early Access is scheduled to end in 2023. Until then, we will focus on adding more content. More quests, character classes, enemies, items, battle environments and more. In the future, we plan to add two items, “Mercenary Corps Assembly” and “Move by Sea”, and more strategic elements will be added.

Please tell us your impressions of releasing it as Early Access.

Nik is great for now! We’ve already received a lot of good feedback and that’s exactly what we expected. Since we are a team of only two people, it is essential to continue to receive feedback and interact with the players in order to make this work the best. In addition, players have highly evaluated this work, which has led to confidence that our direction is correct.

Are there any works that influenced this work?

Nik This work was originally influenced by “Darkest Dungeon”. Inspired by “Dungeons & Dragons”, especially in story design. We wanted to recreate the feeling that the Dungeon Master is explaining the event to the players in this game. As development progressed, it became influenced by strategy games such as “Battle Brothers,” “XCOM,” and ” Into the Breach .”

Are there any plans to support Japanese for this work? Is volunteer translation possible?

Nik I would like to support many languages ​​including Japanese in the future. But now I’m working hard to complete the game. I think that volunteer translation will be possible in the future, but preparations are still needed and we have not reached that stage.

Did the new coronavirus have any impact on development?

Nik In 2020, the development speed slowed down due to the new corona. Chris had three small children and the school was closed, so he couldn’t do much during that time. From last year, I was able to safely return the development schedule to normal!

Is it okay to distribute and monetize this work?

Nik is ok!
